If you feel you really need PT12 or higher, for AAX or other functions, might as well go all the way to current version and modern OS/hardware. Then install PT and keep it just for PT, and get a modern mac for everything else. I'd say, start from scratch and install a good version OSX for PT10 10.6, 10.7, or 10.8. Some people had it working on 10.9, and some on 10.10 with glitches (like popup of inserts not showing until you mouse-over).
To the OP PT10 was supported up to OSX 10.8.5. I never had a complete restore from TM work good.
After that import old data, except Pro Tools!!!!, to your El Cap System. I had a customer and we only could fix a similar problem with installing Snow Leopard, then Pro tools 10.3.10 and then upgrade to El Cap. If possible please do a reinstall from your Time Machine Backup from the point when everything worked.
